O POEMA DO ANEL EM MÉDIO INGLÊS / THE RING-VERSE IN MIDDLE ENGLISH
O médio inglês é o idioma falado na Inglaterra desde a invasão normanda, em 1066, até cerca de 1470. Abaixo está minha versão médio-inglesa - na linguagem e métrica de Chaucer (~1400) - do Poema do Anel. Þ (cuja minúscula é þ) é a letra thorn, equivalente ao th moderno, e ſ é o "s longo" usado no interior das palavras.

Middle English is the language spoken in England from the Norman invasion in 1066 until around 1470. Below is my Middle-English version - in the language and metre of Chaucer (~1400) - of the Ring-verse. Þ (of which þ is the lower case) is the letter thorn, equivalent to modern th, and ſ is the "long s" used within words.

Þree ringes for þe heighe eluen-kinges,
Seuen for dwarues in hir halles depe,
For men, to deeþ y-demed, nine ringes,
Oon for þe Darke Lord, ſo men him clepe,

OS PRINCIPAIS ERROS DE PETER JACKSON / PETER JACKSON'S MAJOR MISTAKES
Neste endereço, Phil Eskew faz um comentário interessantíssimo sobre os erros cometidos por Peter Jackson ao transferir O Senhor dos Anéis para a tela do cinema. Concordo com os principais erros que ele aponta:

• A "incrementada" do papel de Arwen;
• A omissão do Expurgo do Condado;
• Fazer Frodo mandar Sam para casa;
• A alteração da personalidade e da história de Faramir.

At this address, Phil Eskew makes a most interesting commentary about the mistakes committed by Peter Jackson when transferring The Lord of the Rings to the movie screen. I agree with the major errors he points out:

• The "beefing up" of Arwen's role;
• The omission of the Scouring of the Shire;
• The change in Faramir's personality and storyline;
• Having Frodo send Sam home.

Let us see how The Hobbit will come out on film... [ I haven't written in this blog for a long time! ]

According to Michael Drout, there have been published the following versions of The Children of Húrin, a story which will appear in book form next year, edited by Christopher Tolkien.

1977 - The Silmarillion - "Of Túrin Turambar" [prosa / prose]
1980 - Unfinished Tales - "Narn i Hîn Húrin" [prosa /prose]
1984 - The Book of Lost Tales, Part II - "Turambar and the Foalókë" & "The Nauglafring" [prosa / prose]
1985 - The Lays of Beleriand - "The Lay of the Children of Húrin" [poema aliterante / allliterative poem]
1994 - The War of the Jewels - "The Wanderings of Húrin" [prosa / prose]

SdA EM HIERÓGLIFOS / LotR IN HIEROGLYPHS

A figura mostra Senhor dos Anéis em hieróglifos egípcios (o texto superior), seguido de Livro de JRRT. Hieróglifos nem sempre são coloridos, mas dei a estes as cores que julguei adequadas - o glifo de senhor em vermelho, alusão ao Olho de Sauron; a perna em cor de pele convencional; os ziguezagues denotando água em azul; os anéis em amarelo. Em detalhe, a inscrição lê-se assim:

• Segmento de círculo com traço vertical = senhor
• Cinco glifos seguintes (perna, dois ziguezagues, dois anéis) = anel
• Três traços verticais = sinal de plural
• Grupo inicial da segunda linha (rolo de papiro, braço, sinal de amarrar e traço) = livro
• Dois glifos seguintes = de
• Quatro sinais alfabéticos = dj-r-r-t (JRRT)
• Homem sentado = determinativo que indica nome masculino

Abaixo estão a pronúncia reconstruída e os códigos do Manuel de Codage que correspondem a este texto hieroglífico.

The picture shows Lord of the Rings in Egyptian hieroglyphs (the upper text), followed by Book of JRRT. Hieroglyphs are not always coloured, but I gave these the colours I judged to be adequate - the glyph for lord in red, an allusion to the Eye of Sauron; the leg in conventional skin colour; the zigzags denoting water in blue; the rings in yellow. In detail, the inscription is read as follows:

• Circle segment with vertical line = lord
• Five following glyphs (leg, two zigzags, two rings) = ring
• Three vertical lines = sign for plural
• Initial group of second line (papyrus scroll, arm, sign of binding and line) = book
• Two following glyphs = of
• Four alphabetical signs = dj-r-r-t (JRRT)
• Seated man = determinative indicating a man's name
